The importance of physical activity
Physical activity is an important part of good physical and mental health. Being active improves our mood, energy and sleep and also reduces our risk of heart disease, back pain, diabetes and cancer.
Any level of activity is better than none, but there are some research-based recommendations on how to get the most benefit. It is recommened to do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week (or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise). It is important to minimise sedentary time. Older people can undertake activities that improve balance, to reduce the risk of falls.
